International Credit Union Day is a global event that celebrates the spirit and purpose of credit unions, emphasizing their positive influence on individuals and communities alike. At Sebasticook Valley Federal Credit Union (FCU), we are proud to be part of this celebration, rooted in the credit union motto of “people helping people.” As we celebrate International Credit Union Day, we wanted to share how we’re acting on that motto and making an impact right here in our local Maine community — with the support of members and employees alike.

A Commitment to Ending Hunger

One of our proudest accomplishments has been our involvement in the Maine Credit Union League’s Campaign for Ending Hunger. Sebasticook Valley FCU is deeply committed to combating food insecurity, and thanks to the support of our members and community, we’ve helped raise over $400,000 for this important cause as of March 2024. This fundraising effort has been a collaborative endeavor, including events like the annual Valley of Trees Festival, our summer golf tournament, participation in St. Albans Summerfest, and initiatives such as our sweepstakes and yard sale.

With hunger being a critical issue facing many families in Maine, these funds have gone directly to support local food pantries and programs that work tirelessly to help those facing food insecurity. By working together, we are making a tangible difference in the lives of our neighbors.

Supporting Local Heroes: Breast Cancer Awareness

In addition to our hunger relief efforts, Sebasticook Valley FCU is a steadfast supporter of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This October, inspired by our employee survivor Amy Lucas, we’re fundraising on behalf of Sarah’s House of Maine through the sale of pink ribbons. We’re also pleased to be involved in local events, such as Pat’s Pink Pumpkin Sale that benefits the Champion the Cure Challenge, providing a donation match of $3,140 to double the total funds raised. Finally, keep an eye out at our local branches – we’ll  be hosting a “pink out” week to honor those battling breast cancer.

Investing in Education

With member and employee support, another area we’ve achieved a lasting impact in is education. Each year, we award scholarships to high school students and employees who are pursuing higher education, helping to support their dreams and invest in the future of our community. These scholarships not only provide financial assistance, but also reflect our belief in empowering the next generation through education.

Why Credit Unions Matter

Credit unions like Sebasticook Valley FCU are different from traditional banks. We’re member-owned, which means that every decision we make is with the best interests of our members and community in mind. Whether it’s offering affordable loans, providing financial education, or supporting local causes, we’re here to help our community thrive.
