Back-to-school season means new classes, new schedules and new opportunities for students across our communities. For a group of Nokomis Regional High students, it also means heading back to work — at their very own student-run Sebasticook Valley Federal Credit Union branch!
Now in its 15th year, Sebasticook Valley Federal Credit Union’s Student Teller Program gives Nokomis students the opportunity to gain real-world experience working in financial services while in high school. Students are selected based on their community involvement, grades, availability, and professionalism and preparedness displayed during the interview process.
Before the school year begins, student tellers spend time training at both of our branches during the summer. There, they learn the skills they’ll need to serve their fellow students and school staff once the Nokomis branch opens for the year, such as cash handling, check processing, opening accounts and account transfers.
During the school year, the student tellers operate the branch at Nokomis during lunch every school day. The branch is available to students and staff, giving the school community convenient access to credit union services while providing the student tellers with valuable hands-on experience.
The Student Teller Program introduces young people to much more than the day-to-day operations of a credit union. It gives them an opportunity to develop skills they can carry into whatever comes next. Occasionally, it results in growth at our own credit union! Sebasticook Valley FCU loan officer Abby Leavitt, for example, was a student teller prior to graduating in 2012.
By working directly with members, student tellers gain experience in customer service, communication, responsibility and professionalism. At the same time, being immersed in a financial environment can help make concepts like saving, budgeting and responsible money management part of everyday life.
That kind of hands-on experience matters. Financial fitness isn’t something that suddenly becomes important when you graduate, take out your first loan or buy your first home. The habits and confidence young people develop early can help prepare them to make informed financial decisions throughout their lives.
