One of the most impactful ways we bring financial education to life is through Maine Credit Unions’ Financial Fitness Fairs: interactive, hands-on experiences that help students prepare for real-world financial decisions.
These events go beyond traditional classroom learning. Students are assigned a career and monthly income, then tasked with building a realistic budget by visiting stations that represent everyday expenses, like housing, transportation and student loans.
It’s a powerful way to answer the question many young people face: “How do I make my money work in the real world?”
Financial literacy isn’t just about numbers; it’s about confidence. When students understand how to budget, save and plan, they’re better equipped to navigate life after graduation, whether that means entering the workforce, attending college or managing their first apartment.
Since launching in 2004, these fairs have reached more than 80,000 students across Maine, reflecting a long-standing commitment to financial education statewide!
Community Commitment
Maine’s credit unions have been recognized nationally for their leadership in youth financial education, earning the prestigious Desjardins Award multiple times. This recognition underscores a shared belief: when we invest in financial education, we invest in stronger communities.
While Financial Literacy Month shines a spotlight on these efforts, building financial confidence is a year-round journey. Whether it’s opening a first savings account, learning how to budget or planning for long-term goals, having a trusted financial partner can make all the difference.
