On October 16, credit union members around the world will celebrate International Credit Union Day®, an annual event honoring the credit union movement’s lasting impact and achievements. Now in its 77th year, this global celebration recognizes the spirit of “Cooperation for a Prosperous World.”

Here in Maine, that cooperative spirit is stronger than ever. Credit unions are deeply woven into the fabric of our local communities, serving as trusted, people-first financial partners. While big banks may make headlines, Mainers know that credit unions are where neighbors help neighbors.

Why Credit Unions Matter in Maine

Maine consistently ranks among the nation’s leaders in credit union membership. That’s because our state embodies “small town America” values: connection, trust and community care. Just like our local coffee shops, hardware stores and farmers’ markets, Maine’s credit unions help people feel rooted and supported.

Credit unions are not-for-profit financial cooperatives, meaning our success is shared with members, not shareholders. Around the world, there are more than 74,000 credit unions serving over 411 million members in 104 countries, proving that this model of financial cooperation works. Credit unions provide a wide range of services, from savings and checking accounts to home and auto loans, while promoting financial wellbeing.

Sebasticook Valley FCU: A Legacy of People Helping People

Sebasticook Valley Federal Credit Union (FCU) has been part of Maine’s story since 1953, when it opened its doors in a Pittsfield shoe factory. More than 70 years later, Sebasticook Valley FCU serves more than 11,000 members who live, work, worship or attend school across six counties in Central Maine, and our core value of “People helping People” remains at the heart of everything we do.

Whether helping a first-time homebuyer, supporting local schools or raising funds to end hunger, our mission is to uplift the communities we serve.

Promoting Financial Fitness for the Next Generation

Even as Maine’s economy continues to evolve, many households are struggling with inflation and cost-of-living pressures. According to recent surveys, two-thirds of Mainers cite cost of living as their top concern, underscoring the need for strong financial education at all stages of life.

One of the best ways to make a lasting difference is by teaching young people essential money management skills. That’s why Sebasticook Valley FCU proudly participates in Maine Credit Unions’ Financial Fitness Fairs, helping local high school students, and even middle schoolers, develop real-world budgeting skills.

At these interactive fairs, students receive a mock career and monthly income, then visit booths representing housing, food, transportation and entertainment expenses. They must make smart spending choices to balance their budgets; an invaluable lesson they can carry into adulthood.

So far, these fairs have reached nearly 80,000 Maine students, helping them build confidence in managing money. It’s one more way credit unions are going beyond traditional banking to invest in Maine’s future.

Beyond the Bottom Line

Credit unions have always been more than financial institutions; they’re community partners. Programs like the Maine Credit Unions’ Campaign for Ending Hunger, which raises hundreds of thousands of dollars each year, show how financial cooperatives can fight food insecurity while fostering community spirit.

By supporting local schools, small businesses and families, credit unions across Maine are helping to build a prosperous, financially fit state – one member at a time.
